Tachi Swords
The tachi sword is a traditionally crafted Japanese sword dating back to the Kotō period (900-1596), and is a design that preceded the katana. It differs from the katana in several ways, including how it was worn. This style of samurai sword was hung on the belt with the cutting edge down instead of facing up. The mei, or signature, appears on the opposite side of the tang on a tachi blade, so it is still visible when facing outward from the belt.
Authentic tachi must be hung from a leather device or two hangers to ensure it lays horizontally against the body of the wielder. It also averages between 27 and 32 inches in length with a greater taper from hilt to point. The longest known Japanese tachi sword measured 12 feet from end to end with a blade that was a little more than seven feet in length.
